January 2017 Update
I am on a sabbatical from medicine due to a physical injury. I am living in Loreto, BCS, Mexico as an expat with my husband. I am slowly learning spanish and exploring more avenues for my creative side.
What’s For Dinner Doc is one year old today. I started my blog as a place to talk about women’s health but it has evolved into so much more than I could have envisioned. Looking back, I have come to realize that a blog writes itself. It finds it’s voice and it takes you, the author, along for the ride. My posts have been shaped by current events, new research, food trends and my daily experiences as a physician. I have ventured from my kitchen table into photography, humor and flash fiction. I’ve shared my deepest thoughts about human suffering and medical education with you and we have shared a few laughs along the way.
I have met many amazing bloggers through Fiesta Friday and Friday Fictioneers. These virtual gatherings and their dedicated hosts have given me a safe haven to try out new ideas. My fellow bloggers have been free with their praise and encouragement. Their enthusiasm is contagious.
I am sincerely grateful for everyone who took the time to stop by this little eclectic blog. I don’t know where my blog will take me in 2015 but you are welcome to ride along. Your sharing and commenting means the world to me. Thank you.
“What’s for dinner,doc?” is a common refrain at my office. My medical assistant, Chris, seems genuinely curious when she asks about my cooking adventures and misadventures. (I’m
kinda sorta sure it’s not just because I sign her paychecks.) My replies unfortunately are sometimes met with good natured chuckles as my sister and personal assistant, Cheryl, gets a few laughs by exaggerating my “wild abandon with spices and fresh ingredients”. An artist must occasionally suffer for her art. (Did you hear the sigh and dramatic pause?)
I’m a gynecologist but I spent most of my time talking with patients about healthy living. The majority of women in the U.S. will die from heart disease, diabetes and hypertension not from gynecological cancers. We talk about obesity and weight loss a lot. I want this blog to be a place where women can have a seat at my kitchen table to talk about recipes, healthy living and common women’s health concerns.
The Kitchen Table
I fondly remember my lovely mother holding court at the kitchen table. She and her girlfriends and/or sisters would gather around the table over coffee to discuss the business of their lives. Heart aches, joys, frustrations, current events, husbands, kids, and health were all kitchen table topics. My husband and I agree that the best parenting advice we can give is to sit down at the table with the entire family for at least one meal a day. My sons are men now but they know that they can always come home for a chat at the kitchen table.
The kitchen symbolizes home and comfort to me and I want you to feel welcome at my table.
What’s with The Tomatoes?
My father was a fabulous gardener. He spent 9 decades perfecting his tomato crops. Growing tomatoes was only one of the many life lessons I learned from my dad. To grow a perfect tomato you must be patient, attentive, and nurturing but you also need to find a balance between the elements and learn when to let go and get out of its way. Not unlike doctoring.
I adore tomatoes. Individual tomatoes, like humans, are unique with many colors and shapes. They are delicate and bruise easily, yet some thrive under the stress of adverse conditions. They grow best with fresh air and sunshine. Tomatoes are nutrition power houses and they are used in almost every cuisine. They represent patience and fortitude to me.

I am a practicing board certified gynecologist at Center for Women’s Health and I am on the clinical faculty of the University of Nevada School of Medicine.
I received my medical degree from the University of Nevada Reno and my residency training at OHSU in Portland, Oregon.
I care deeply about women’s health, especially preventative care. I practice compassionate care for all patients.
I like to write, cook, eat, cycle, sail and laugh.
